The Nobels and Academia

So now the Nobels are done.

I've noticed a (perhaps nonsurprising) similarity between the Nobels and academia. What is it?

1) The non-bullsh*t fields (chemistry, physics, medicine, and, yes, economics) still have respectible prizes. This year, as in most years, the winners are deserving. That is, while some will argue whether any particular winner is the most deserving, I believe most researchers in these fields believe the recipients aren't complete jokes.

2) The bullsh*t fields (peace and literature) have descended into just another institution ruined by the long march of the left. Harold Pinter wins for literature and an incompetent UN official and his incompetent agency win for peace. But, hey, they've both stuck Bush and the US in the eye, right?

It is the same now at academia. There is fine work going on in the hard sciences, math, economics, statistics, psychology and even some parts of political science (the theoretical, mathy side). I may have missed a few, but the rest now is leftism under the guise of critical this or that and viewing everything through the prism of race, class, gender, and sexual preference.

Next Year they will award the peace prize to Zarqawi. After all, he is fighting for peace in Iraq (as long as he is in charge).
