Sometime Chairman Carpenter wanted to inject his opinion in the discussion. Here is his comment:
President Bush's "Trust me" justification for the nomination invites us to substitute his judgment for ours and to place his judgment beyond criticism. While we sometimes agree to do that on matters of national security (where the material information cannot be disclosed), we shouldn't have to do that on a Supreme Court nomination. However, I don't see how a defeat of this nominee could be anything but a disaster for Republicans nationwide. The annoying thing is that this situation was so unnecessary. With the Roberts nomination, a 55 senator majority, and the "exceptional circumstances" promise in his pocket, there was no reason not to choose a known conservative heavyweight.
The President may be smarter than all of us, but until his personality cult is farther advanced, he cannot expect blind support for an unknown nominee.

It'll be all about Roe v. Wade, and she'll be confirmed regardless.
Though this may be over-simplifying things, I think the degree to which there is a fight or not will depend entirely on whether or not she gives any indication regarding her feelings on Roe.
If she indicates in any way that she'd overturn it, the liberals will go beserk, the Dems will oppose her, the Republicans and conservatives will rally around her, and she'll be confirmed.
If she gives no indication on Roe, conservatives will be unhappy, Dems won't stronlgy oppose her for fear of getting someone they view as worse next time, Republicans will support her unenthusiastically, and she'll be confirmed.
Tell sometime chairman Carpenter to get with the program and sign up.
