Why Bush Picked Miers
I am still pondering the reasons as to why Bush chose Miers over numerous other candidates. One theory follows along with what Harsh Pencil cited below about Bush's personal relationship with Miers:
The lesson learned from the Souter appointment is not to trust the recommendation of others if you feel uncomfortable about someone. It is very possible that Bush was never able to get comfortable with the likes of Luddig or Janice Rodgers brown or Mike McConnel. Because Bush did not know these people very well, he would have to rely on others to verify the conservatism they were supposed to espouse (this was the mistake GHW Bush made in relying on the recommendations for Souter). Frankly, some conservative intellectuals are somewhat kooky, which is why Bush may have followed his own instincts in nominating Miers, a person whom he has worked closely with for the past 6 years, and probably knows very well her views.
I guess we will find out if Bush had good instincts. I am still very skeptical.

The more I read, the more it is appearing that Miers could be the ultimate nightmare the Democrats have been fearing from Bush.
It appears that Miers is a very conservative religious evangelical christian with a "textual" view of the bible (creationism and all) that also happens to be a very successful and respected lawyer. If this is true, Democrats will have to oppose her almost totally on the fact that she is an evangelical Christian. It is going to get ugly.
If her only conservative attribute it that she's a Christian, she is a Democrat's dream.
I too am confused by this pick. I fear the "Soutter factor", but W has learned many (but, alas, not all) of the lessons he should have from his father's term, so I hope that's unlikely.
I'm withholding judgement for a bit, but we'll only know for certain when future decisions come down.
I support this woman with no qualifications whatsoever.
No one would be better for this job.
I believe we should waste no time in confirming her.
All in all, I cannot say enough good things about this candidate or recommend her too highly.
