The GOP needs to prepare to start running

The Katrina-Miers-high gas-prices-Tom Delay fall surprise is eventually going to subside. The GOP needs to be ready with proposals to make this country better. We need to come out hitting hard to take the no-idea-liberals by surprise. I have some suggestions as to proposals that the GOP should run on:

1) Immigration reform. The GOP leaders should meet behind closed doors and hammer out a compromise between Bush's guest worker program and the paleocon build a wall concepts. This compromise should then become the GOP platform.

2) Disaster planning. The GOP needs to propose serious disaster planning reform. We need to be ready for the next flu outbreak or terrorist nuclear attack.

Does anyone have any other (legitimate) suggestions?

I'd like to say that they could come up with a serious plan to cut the budget. Detailed, across-the-board cuts.

But I don't think anyone would believe them. I wouldn't.
