Meirs Appointment?
I really don’t know what to think about the Harriet Meirs appointment. But, here is my take. She is a “compassionate conservative.” Bush knows her. If he was going to pick someone who was a woman and wasn’t a federal judge, he wasn’t going to rely on someone else for a referral and repeat his father’s mistake (remember Sununu’s referral of Souter to his father). So, he chose a compassionate conservative he knew. Now the question is whether she is more compassionate or more conservative. I can live with either. My guess is that she will be at least as good as O’Conner. Remember no is suggesting she was on Kerry’s short list. But, there is reason to pause -- in 1988 she gave $1,000 to Gore’s presidential campaign.
